A Detailed Guide to Commonwealth Home Support Program

CHSP or Commonwealth Home Support Program offers initial support to older adults who require assistance to manage their needs at home. Service providers work with CHSP to ensure their independence. The support provided may include daily tasks, transport, home modifications, social support and nursing care. 

What is the CHSP?

Commonwealth Home Support Program is home support services that help senior citizens live their lives independently in their homes. It offers them respite services to give carers a break. The program focuses on:

  • Helping people live an independent life 
  • Aim at working with them instead of doing things for them
  • Offer help to a large number of people

The four programs replaced by CHSP are:

  • the Day Therapy Centres (DTC) program
  • the Assistance with Care and Housing for the Aged (ACHA) program
  • the Commonwealth Home and Community Care (HACC) program
  • planned respite from the National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP)

Significance of Commonwealth Home Support Program

For whom is it?

CHSP is for those older adults who are weak and require support to stay independently at home and are either:
  • Sixty-five years of age or more (50 or more for Torres Strait Island People or Aboriginal) plus have functional inability and requires assistance.
  • Prematurely aged persons (50 years or more for Torres Strait Islander People or Aboriginals) and on a low income or at risk of being homeless or homeless due to housing issues or not finding accommodation.
The Commonwealth home support program also supports carers by offering planned respite services for the CHSP recipients. It helps carers take a break from their routine caring responsibilities.
